Moorhead man sentenced for kidnapping, robbery, and shootout. July 28, 2009 No Comments

Not so sure I understand the not wanting to go back to prison so I shot at cops stuff…

“Moorhead, Minn. (WDAY TV) – A judge has sentenced a man who last spring kidnapped a woman in Fargo, robbed an auto parts store in Moorhead, then fired shots at officers in a shootout to 24 years in prison, but it was basically a formality. WDAY 6 Reporter Todd Kurtz was in Moorhead for the sentencing today, he’s live to explain.

Vincent Degidio sat in a room in Butler, North Carolina today and through a video conference pleaded guilty to two charges in Clay County; one for attempted murder of a police officer and one for aggravated robbery.

A judge sentenced him to 24 years in prison for the two accounts, but it’s a formality since that time will run concurrently with a longer federal sentence, which is nearly 29 years in prison.

Degidio led police on a wild chase on April 3rd 2008 after firing shots at police officers near the Meadows golf course the chase and standoff ended with Degidio being shot. He’s now paralyzed from the incident; officers involved say they’re glad for the closure.

“I know they’re satisfied with the outcome I mean I’ve talked to them about it, as far as the officers I mean they’ve moved forward they’re continuing to do their job.”

Degidio chose not to comment when given the chance, but his lawyer did say Degidio didn’t mean to harm a specific officer. He says Degidio didn’t want to go back to prison, so he fired on officers to get them to shoot and kill him, what’s known as suicide by officer.”

Sean Ambrosie (Moorhead, MN) No Comments

I always like reading about a former Spud hockey player who reaches the next level.

STORRS, Conn. – The University of Connecticut men’s hockey Head Coach Bruce Marshall announced the incoming class of eight set to join the Huskies during the 2009-10 season. Seven of the newly added players are new to the university setting while one comes in as a transfer from Quinnipiac University in nearby Hamden, Conn.

The class of 2013 represents seven different states and one province and will add six skaters and two goaltenders to the ranks.

“We are excited for this incoming class and feel they will add a lot of competitiveness to our line-up,” said Coach Marshall.

Sean Ambrosie (Moorhead, MN) played for the Prince George Spruce Kings of the British Columbia Hockey League where he led the team in scoring during the regular season recording 20 goals and 39 assists for 59 points and, during the playoffs, knocked in two goals while dishing out six assists in just five games.

Ambrosie started his junior hockey career with the Winnipeg South Blues of the Manitoba Hockey League after finishing a very successful high school career in Moorhead, Minnesota. In Winnipeg, he finished with 24 goals and 29 assists for 53 points. His 24 goals finished him second on the team.

At 6′2, Ambrosie is a big, two-way center that can make plays at both ends of the ice. He also brings a scoring touch to the team and will be a nice complement to the current core of centers.”

Theodore Wilt, 26, of Moorhead, Minn No Comments

Never heard of him.

Arraignment today on murder and felonious assault charges. He is accused of killing friend Nicholas Prigodich, 26, of Cleveland, July 4. Prosecutors say he was visiting Prigodich and they went to a party, where Prigodich saw Wilt talking to his former girlfriend. They argued and Wilt pulled out a knife and stabbed Prigodich in the heart.”

MSUM to close $9 million budget gap without layoffs No Comments

This is good news. I am a student at MSUM. I am not happy to hear about less class offerings and larger sizes, but I am nearly done so it will affect me very little.

“MOORHEAD – Minnesota State University Moorhead will close a $9 million budget gap and balance its books for the next two years without layoffs, President Edna Szymanski announced today.

The university’s multi-pronged approach to avoiding layoffs includes offering early retirement incentives, reorganizing classes and other operations and implementing a “banded tuition” model that officials hope will entice students to take more credits and thus boost MSUM’s share of the state budget.

MSUM is already down 5 percent in personnel after a hiring freeze was put in place last fall. Staffers in areas such as maintenance are spread thin and will remain so until the budget picture becomes clearer, Szymanski said.

Students can expect to see larger class sizes and less frequent offerings of low-enrollment classes, she said.

“If we pull together, we will get through this, and we will preserve the affordable excellence of this really wonderful place,” Szymanski told about 30 staff and administrators who gathered this morning for the first of three town hall budget meetings being held on campus today.

Groundskeeper Gary Lacher, who led the group in a round of applause after the presentation, said he’s been through three layoffs or shutdowns in his working career and knows first-hand the stress that comes with trying to find another job.

“I’m very satisfied with what’s going on,” he said. “There’s an increased workload, but people can deal with that for a while until things get a little better.””

The Blues season is over. I guess I should have made it to a game.

Spencer Kidder homered twice for Fergus Falls.

Moorhead man faces molestation charges. July 25, 2009 No Comments

I do not know him. Why is a 14 year old girl hanging out and or playing pool with a 28 year old? I don’t get it.

“A Moorhead man faces two felonies in Clay County District Court amid charges he sexually molested a 14-year-old girl.

Tracy Lee Fees, 28, is charged with second-degree criminal sexual conduct related to a June 17 incident and attempted second-degree criminal sexual conduct related to a July 3 incident.

Each charge carries a potential maximum sentence of 25 years.

Court documents state:

Moorhead police were contacted July 10 about a 14-year-old being touched sexually by Fees. The girl told police he had grabbed her breasts and asked inappropriate sexual questions.

The girl told police Fees made repeated comments about her breasts on June 17 and began asking multiple questions about her boyfriend and her sexual relationship with him.

The girl said she told Fees she was uncomfortable, but he continued asking questions and began trying to touch her breasts. She said she blocked his hands, but he was successful.

When she tried to move away, he grabbed her arm and told her to sit back down. The girl said she agreed to play pool with Fees on July 3 and he again tried to touch her breasts. She said she blocked his hand and then punched him in the face. He did not try to touch her again, she said.

A detective met with the girl on July 15 and recorded a phone call between the girl and Fees. In the call, she asked Fees why he touched her.

“Because I thought that’s what you wanted,” Fees said. He promised not to do it again and told her if she told anyone he would not be able to see his son again.

The call originated in North Dakota where state law generally allows for an officer to listen to the call if the one party approves of it, Assistant Cass County State’s Attorney Reid Brady said.

A phone listing for Fees could not be found. Fees’ next court date is set for Aug. 17. He is free on $20,000 bond.”

PEPP receives $10k grant for racial justice No Comments

The only thing that sticks out to me is the recommendations were made in 1999. It took 10 years to get 10,000 dollars? That’s no good.

“The People Escaping Poverty Project, Moorhead, has been awarded a $10,000 grant from the Minneapolis-based Headwaters Foundation for Justice.

PEPP will use the funding to bring people and organizations together to pick-up on recommendations made in 1999 by the Minnesota Advisory Committee to the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights that were focused on communities of color in Moorhead.”

Late sacrifice fly leads Blues to a win over Fergus Falls July 24, 2009 No Comments

Rahman is a very good baseball player. He is basically a good all around athlete as he should be one of the Spud Hockey players go to guys this winter.

“THIEF RIVER FALLS, Minn. – John Cahill connected for a sacrifice fly in the top of the ninth inning to score Braden Rahman to help the Moorhead Blues defeat Fergus Falls 6-5 in a Division 1 District 9 American Legion baseball tournament on Thursday.

Rahman, who went 2-for-3 with two runs, got on base with a single and advance to third base on an error by the left fielder.

Cahill finished 1-for-4 with three RBIs.

Jake Bernhardt was 2-for-3 of the Blues.

On the mound, Moorhead’s Scott Petry struck out nine batters in seven innings for the win.”

Hjemkomst Center to host flood-fight event No Comments

I do not know if this will be very interesting. I was out sandbagging or filling sandbags every day of the flood fight, so I am not sure hearing somebody else talking about their “adventures” is going to be worth going to.

“The Historical and Cultural Society and Hjemkomst Center will host a flood-fight event at 6 p.m. Thursday at the center in Moorhead.

Staff members will share their 2009 flood-fighting adventures at this event that is free and open to the public. Attendees are invited to bring a brown-bag dinner.”
